The Community Edition for MeeGo evolved from a desire to get a usable developer friendly MeeGo build working on the N900 device.
The initial Handset UX was suitably unstable and inflexible in its utility.
It consists of the core features required for a developer to transition his device and thinking from Maemo to MeeGo without losing basic functionality.
The current CE build has been orchestrated by Nokia managers and engineers and has utilised amazing developer effort from the N900 adaption team.
Beyond September 2011, this Nokia involvement is reducing and its direction is to be decided by the steering group this document outlines.
The proposal calls for a preliminary 3 member group based upon meritocracy and current involvement in the project. The term and duration of each members involvement shall be detailed in the first meeting.
Additional seats will be granted to Nokia and any vendor with significant contribution towards an open and freely redistributable and well supported codebase.
This group shall get together monthly to discuss progress and potential new avenues as well as work direction for the upcoming 1/3/6/12 months.
A roadmap should be produced for these short and mid term goals and maintained and revised to give focus to developers during the periods specified.
Work to be completed during this period is flexible as developer effort and options arise.
Responsible for overall delivery of project, and organisational activities:
The MeeGo Community Edition shall aim to produce the best effort MeeGo compatible build which allows continued development of Qt applications and products primarily focused upon the N900, N950 and N9 devices and expandable up towards the tablet market.
It should be flexible in its inclusion criteria and a testbed for new principles and approaches and should review available and upcoming projects, UXes and applications.
As the projects mature their suitability for inclusion can be assessed.
The agility shown in its inception towards a stable yet useful system is paramount.
Alternative builds and adaptions should be welcomed in future roadmaps.
