MeeGo Conference 2010

Initial coordination of the MeeGo Summit / Conference vision.

Note: This will probably be renamed to the MeeGo Conference, since Summit is usually used by the Linux Foundation and other organizations to refer to invite-only events. Since this is open to anyone, it is really more of a conference than a summit.

Format

• 3 day event.
• Use a call for papers process - all submissions (including those from Intel / Nokia) will use this process, and a small selection committee will be responsible for choosing the presentations based on the merits of each submission.
• Anyone is welcome to submit a proposal or attend the event.
• We hope to make it free for attendees (assuming it will be funded entirely by sponsors).

Other format suggestions

• 3 days event, 2 days organized by the community and one organized by the companies involved. Developers, platform and power users tracks. --Vdvsx 22:24, 12 March 2010 (UTC)

The MeeGo Conference targets a technical audience based on:

• MeeGo developers
• OSVs, OEMs, and other integrators
• Other MeeGo project contributors

Logistics

We will be forming a planning committee to manage the event logistics.

Proposed Dates

Week 3 or 4 in October are looking like the most promising dates.

Candidate Locations

We are currently leaning toward locations in Central Europe and are open to venue suggestions. We are looking for something more interesting than a typical hotel conference setting. While the big chain hotels in major cities are nice, they are a little sterile, so we'd like to find a unique venue for this event. Maybe a nice lodge / hotel in the countryside no more than an hour from a major city with an airport.

Our Conference Venue Requirements Include:

• 600 person room (keynotes)
• Breakout rooms for 4-5 tracks of (100-150)
• Excellent network connectivity for web-streaming / attendee use

Germany

• The Westin Bellevue Dresden
• MARITIM Hotel & Internationales Congress Center Dresden
• bcc alternatively Berlin in combination with c-base

• Congress Centrum Messe Frankfurt
• Marriott Frankfurt-- up to 1000 attendees, 15 rooms in general
• Alte Oper Frankfurt also huge capacity

Poland

• Centennial Hall in Wrocław -- up to 2000 attendees in main hall

Europe

• London - Great air connectivity, home of Intel Linux R&D group. Recommended as a top choice by the Linux Foundation. Not so good for non-EU citizens due to visa requirements and processing times.
• Brussels - Lots of choice i.e. Square-brussels
• Helsinki - home of Nokia. Kaapelitehdas
• Paris? - Potentially lots of choice for facilities, good air connectivity
• Oslo - home of Qt
• Stuttgart - the city supports OSS and is also very actively interested in hosting such summits as ours - read bottom of the website - and is home of Red Hat, IBM and HP in germany.

USA

• Portland - home of Intel

• Boston MA - Burlington Nokia office and thriving dev community

• Mountain View, CA - in the heart of Silicon Valley, near San Francisco, beautiful area. Nokia and Intel both have major presence there. Recommended as a top choice by the Linux Foundation.

Canada

• Vancouver, British Columbia - in North America, which could use the attention market-wise. Nokia has a presence there. Travel is less restrictive for those coming from outside North America than it would be into the US.

China

Japan

• Akihabara, Tokyo - Akihabara UDX has been used in Japan Linux Symposium 2009.

Bringing developers from old platform to new

- please define here how the old differs from the new. I am assuming the new platform includes using the Qt framework as the standard, but what else? What is the smooth way to move RPM -> DEB?

MeeGo for N900 and N8x0 owners

 - What is MeeGo in a concrete way? Is it a set of userland libraries and applications that you can run on your N900 in a chrooted environment for example?

Bring our old power users over

- dual booting a "Meego flash image" on your N?x? device? What about MER?

New developers coming to MeeGo

Qt and WRT, and maybe Clutter

Distributing MeeGo software

- yes, please explain how to do this in light of the current system of uploading Debian packages & promoting?
