MeeGo Handset UX Application Usage Model

Introduction

  • This wiki page presents the device characteristics and usage contexts targeted handset device.

Context and Collaboration Dimension

  • Two key dimensions, Context and Collaboration, should be considered in usage of a UX application
Contextual Dimension Collaboration Dimension
  • Context is much more than the mere location; it is something that relates to all situational factors around the user in a particular usage of one feature.
  • Usages of one feature are considered in each context targeted by MeeGo Handset device.
  • Collaboration dimension focuses on relationship and interaction between one UX application and other system components. The involved components can be other UX applications, and system services available from either local or remote systems.
  • Usages of one feature are considered within each of appropriate collaboration scenarios

Mobile Usage Contexts

  • Context is much more than the mere location; it is something that relates to all situational factors around the user in a particular use case
  • A context is divided into four categories, network services, user state, device state and ambient conditions, each of category is further modeled by a set of attributes.

Handset Device Characteristic

Characteristic Description
Small Device
  • Portable
    • It can be operated with a single hand, even if two hands or a hand and a surface are more convenient.
  • Small Screen
    • A small screen, can effectively display only a single window at a time, with dialog boxes and menus. The user can thus use exactly one application at a time.
  • One-Handed Operation
  • Difficult Text Entry
Touchable (Touch Screen)
  • The applications have room for interface controls demanded by a touch (vs. mouse) interface
Battery-Powered
  • Although not tethered to an electrical cord during use, mobile user still cannot roam far without a charger in briefcase. Since mobility dictates compactness in size, even the longest lasting batteries offer a very limited amount of power.
Accessories
  • To pick up the device and take it from a docking station or port at any time. This means that devices other than the digitizer and the display may be unplugged with no prior warning
Sensor Awareness
  • Usability research shows that users change orientation (Portrait and Landscape Display Mode) based on the task that they are performing
Personal
  • The device generally belongs to only one person, is personally identifiable, and has a messaging address and ongoing service.
  • The device is not shared, and is likely to be customized
Communicative
  • The device can send and receive messages of various forms and connect with the network in various ways
Always on, Always connected
  • Instead of being turned on only for use, PCDs are turned off only to preclude interruption for various temporary reasons
  • The device can be awakened quickly by either the user or the network
Inconsistent Connectivity
  • Even wide-area wireless networks like WiMAX will have dead spots, limited coverage, and the inability to penetrate to the middle of the mountain. Thus intermittent connection is an integral part of using a handset device, especially when on the move.
Limited Resources
  • Limited processor power
  • Limited network bandwidth
  • Limited memory/storage space
