Background

Everybody likes the principle of news written by the community. It seems that everybody actually likes the http://maemo.org/news system, combining over hundred sources that get promoted or demoted based on user input (thumbs up & down) and karma from several sources e.g. del.icio.us, technorati... read more

But it will take us a while to implement something like that in meego.com. In the meantime we can start aggregating blogs and other MeeGo specific news sources.

How to start

Drupal includes an Aggregation module out of the box: http://drupal.org/handbook/modules/aggregator There is an official module that resembles a PlanetPlanet, but do we really need the extra maintenance for that? http://drupal.org/project/udplanet

Social News proof-of-concept

The maemo.org Midgard team has prepared a proof-of-concept deployment of using Maemo's Midgard-based Social News system for MeeGo News.

The deployment consists of:

This system can be evaluated in its current temporary location and deployed on meego.com as desired.

Homepage

Would these news have a presence in the homepage? Under "What's new", negotiating space with the current static promos?

Note: the "What's new" area on the home page will likely be taken over by releases when they exist. Not exactly sure where that puts the What's new or the planet?

Blog aggregation checklist

Anybody can request the aggregation of their blog at meego.com under the following conditions:

  1. You are contributing to MeeGo in a direct way: software & community contributors, partners, manufacturers, specialized media...
  2. You have a public profile created at meego.com specifying your link with the MeeGo project.
  3. You have a blog somewhere with a MeeGo specific feed (your posts about lolcats won't show up @ Planet MeeGo).
  4. Your posts in that MeeGo feed are in English.
  5. You have been blogging about MeeGo for a while already. Exception: you have an official role in the project and you are starting to blog about your work at MeeGo.
  6. Your feed must be valid and must contain at least one MeeGo post (more preferred).

Request the aggregation of your blog

If you fulfill your requirements above you can request the aggregation of your blog by adding it to the candidates list below:

  • URL of your meego.com profile.
  • URL of your MeeGo specific feed.

Note: If it hasn't been added within 2-3 days, please send a message to Dawn Foster or Quim Gil. Please remember that it will only be added if it meets the criteria.

Candidates

Or you can start adding yourself to the list of candidates (please do not add other people's blogs to this list):

(Add after first post to validate feed)

See also: Note: I believe that these 2 blogs listed below were submitted by someone other than the blog author, so they can't be syndicated until the author confirms that they would like to have their content republished as part of the MeeGo planet.

  • Emmanuele Bassi's blog

The proposed blogs are also maintained in the MeeGo News proof-of-concept and are available in OPML format from http://news.meego.nemein.net/news/planet_meego/feeds.opml

Next steps

What would be the next steps in order to introduce a system including news promotions based on ratings?

Should we simply start simple and leave this discussion for later?

Start simple, especially with an initially limited set of people. Most Planet's have scores of active bloggers (in an "anything goes" format too - not just restricted to one topic) and do not provide any rankings. I see this as generally unnecessary, but definitely not a blocker. --abock
